Editor’s Report - July 2023
We live in exciting times where we see change coming to us at an accelerated rate, technology seems to be taking a giant step ahead especially as we look at our favourite pastimes especially the automotive industry. The ever changing technology associated with cars as we know them, The EV space has rapidly accelerated, I was speaking with an ex colleague on battery technology a product that cost $125,000 in 2013 equivalent specification today is around $4,000. We see new developments in Tyre technology that reduces the rolling load coefficient and improves mileage per kWh.
Another point we see emerging is discussion around ChatGPT, why? Because now it is a commercial application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). ChatGPT uses data stored on the web, it is a machine learning tool that has soaked up a lot of books and data, it is excellent at creating text and writing. Others for example have used it to diagnose issues with cars by providing the Error Codes from scanners, or by listing the issues noted by a mechanic, it works well by providing a list of diagnostic steps to provide clues to diagnosis of issues.
As we move forward in a world of AI we will hear horror stories like it will destroy the world, we don’t need it! Interesting let’s have a look what we use today that uses AI, do you use Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze? These products all use AI to provide updated information on your trip, including routes, speed cameras, accidents etc. this is AI Technology working for you.
In 2013 I started working on learning algorithms for use in Medical Imaging and this was my first foray into AI. We used a huge number of cases
that showed changes of a certain nature, this was listed as pattern recognition in an image, you can also apply it to the raw data that is used to create and image, thus eliminating extraneous smoothing algorithms that are used in basic image production. Because Images are stored digitally now with a diagnosis, algorithms can be checked against an existing anonymised data set. The potential is huge in the Healthcare Industry and can provide better sensitivity and specificity. There are many other examples in Healthcare which will only lead to better diagnosis and management of disease processes.
Whilst we have only touched on AI it will remain in daily use we will benefit from the application. Remember the only constant in life is change! Live for the day.
Happy Motoring.
