Thursday 11th November at 8pm: Guest Speaker, Ian Berg.

Our Guest speaker with be Ian Berg who will be outlining the story of Jas A Munro & Co: The Largest Garage in Melbourne. This fascinating story has now been published and Ian will be giving us a summary of the highlights, along with his own story of how he came to write the book.

In a nutshell the book tells the story of, Jas A Munro & Co of Elizabeth they advertised as having the largest garage in Melbourne. Already a very successful businessman, Jas soon became smitten by the new horseless carriage and subsequently took on a host of motor agencies. In 2019, Ian obtained unique access to the Munro archives which had been uncatalogued and unseen for nearly a century, while stored at the Munro site right next to Queen Victoria Market. This site was for over 100 years remained one of the largest private landholdings in the city of Melbourne, prior to its acquisition and redevelopment by the City of Melbourne. Ian digitally copied and sorted thousands of documents and photographs in order to understand the Munro story. The records have proven to be a treasure trove of material providing insight into the built history of Melbourne, the commercial aristocracy of the era and the evolution of the motorcar in Australia during the early part of the twentieth century.

Ian will also have copies of the book available on the night, and he will be happy to autograph them for you.
